I think most of us would agree that moving forward, we would like to spend more time outside of our homes, but that doesn’t seem to be happening anytime soon. So instead, let’s shift our perspectives to finding more ways to enjoy our time at home.
In that vein, we’re highlighting our favorite home improvement goals for 2021 that are sure to make time at home more enjoyable and less costly.
Improve Your Indoor Air Quality
With all of the time we’re spending at home, it’s important to make sure that our indoor air quality is meeting the highest standards. Improving the quality f your indoor air doesn’t mean burning more soy candles (although this alternative is far better than petroleum-based candles). Instead, it should mean being more diligent about replacing air filters – remember that air filters should get replaced every 30 to 90 days depending on the level of pollutants in the air.
Another way to freshen up the air is by opening up your windows. Opening multiple windows at once will create a cross breeze that will whisk away the stale air and bring in the fresh air.
Additionally, try adding more houseplants to your decor. Houseplants have been proven to produce more oxygen and remove pollutants from the air around them. Remember, this isn’t a catch-all solution, but it’s a step in the right direction.
Find an Efficient Thermostat Setting

One simple way to limit your energy consumption and save money is by being a bit more mindful of your thermostat settings.
When it’s warmer outside, you want your thermostat setting to be a little bit higher, and on cold days you’ll want the thermostat a little bit lower. According to the Department of Energy, 78° is the ideal summer temperature, while 68° is perfect for winter both in terms of comfort and energy savings.
Stay on top of Drain Cleaning
Toilets, showers, sinks and bathtubs, all pose a threat to the health of your drain system because they all have drains. But it’s not the drain that’s the danger; it’s what you’re letting fall down the drain.
- Toilets: do not flush baby wipes, kitty litter, cotton pads, Q-Tips, sanitary products
- Sinks: contrary to popular belief, not everything can go through your garbage disposal! Avoid tossing fibrous foods, coffee grounds, eggshells, bones, and starchy foods.
- Showers and bathtubs: the largest culprit is your hair. Hair gets caught in the drain, forming a clog and preventing the water from continuing to flow.

Taking care of your home’s plumbing starts with your pipes. Do you know the last time your home’s pipes were replaced? If you don’t, you should consider getting an inspection.
