5 Tips for Beating Allergy Season

Published by Blue Corona

Spring has sprung! This means it’s time to ditch the coat and swap it for a travel pack of tissues everywhere you go. If spring allergies have got you down, even with allergy medication at your disposal, it’s time to take things up a notch. Keep reading to learn our best tips for beating allergy season at home!

Replace Your Air Filters

The simplest way to maintain and improve your indoor air quality is to stay on top of your air filter replacements. We typically recommend replacing your air filters every 30 to 90 days; however, you should replace them every 30 days if you have seasonal allergies. This will ensure that the pollen, dust, and dander that triggers your allergies are caught in the filter before they can circulate throughout your home.

For even more filtration, consider installing advanced air filters. While standard filters are about 1 inch thick, these advanced filters are between 5 and 6 inches thick, making them even more adept at removing dirt, dust, pollen, and other allergens from the air. Additionally, they only require replacement every 6 to 9 months.

Install a REME Halo System

You might already have a generic electronic air cleaner at home, but if you really want to breathe easier, we recommend the REME Halo. If you’ve never heard of a REME Halo system, it is an advanced air purification system that is fitted to your air ducts in order to efficiently clean your air before it is circulated throughout your home. It does this by utilizing UV lights as well as by producing a low amount of hydrogen peroxide, which helps reduce the presence of viruses, bacteria, mold spores, odors, Volatile Organic Compounds, and other microbes in your home.

Remove Moisture

In the dry winter months, you might have a humidifier running in your bedrooms to help you breathe easier at night, but here in the south, we have a very different climate in the warmer summer months. Southern humidity is no joke and can lead to the growth of mold, mildew, and bacteria which all trigger allergies. The best way to combat these types of allergies is with a dehumidification system.

Improve Your Home’s Ventilation

Some homes need extra help getting fresh air indoors. If your home suffers from inadequate ventilation, consider installing fresh air vents. These simple yet effective vents bring fresh air from outside into your home’s indoor air supply. This air exchange can provide much needed relief to those suffering from allergies related to mold, mildew, or bacteria.

Upgrade Your Cleaning Routine

Even if you already have a disciplined cleaning routine, there are always ways to improve. Here are our must-do tasks during allergy season:

1. Vacuum frequently. We track a wide variety of allergens into the home every time we enter from outside—whether from our shoes, clothing, or bags. We recommend vacuuming at least weekly, and if you have a robot vacuum like a Roomba, then set it to run every morning or evening.

2. Don’t forget to dust. Even with the vacuuming, there is still dust that floats throughout your house and settles on the furniture. Many people’s allergies are exacerbated by dust, so keep it to a minimum with weekly dusting.
