How to Fix a Leaky Pipe Under Kitchen Sink

Published by Blue Corona

If you have a broken kitchen pipe, don’t fret. Read this guide to learn how to replace leaky drain pipes with simple, easy-to-follow steps!

Signs Your Kitchen Pipe Leaks

Detecting a broken pipe in the kitchen is tricky if you don’t know what to look for. Fortunately, there are several signs your pipes broke, including

  • Wet spots
  • Mold spores
  • High water bills
  • Musty odors
  • Foundation cracks
  • You hear running water sounds

If you notice any of these issues, you’re likely facing a kitchen pipe leak. Broken pipes are annoying, especially if facing the consequences. However, you can fix it yourself. Follow the steps below to learn how!

Steps to Fixing a Leaking Kitchen Sink Pipe

If you want to fix your broken kitchen sink drain pipe, follow these steps:

  1. Locate the Problem: Listen to where the water is coming from. Remove all items from below the kitchen sink to first spot the leak. Then, place a bowl under the sink and turn on the faucet. You can then identify where the leak is on the pipe.
  2. Determine the Type of Leak: Your water leak may be from the pressurized pipe if the water sprays far away from the source. Otherwise, it may be due to the drain seal or drainpipe if there’s water pooling.
  3. Replace the P-Trap: Buy a new P-trap kit with all the necessary parts for installation. It helps to bring along your old P-trap and pipes to ensure the proper dimensions and fit.
  4. Screw In the New Pipe Vertically: Use the most extended part of the PVC pipe to connect your drain pipe to the lower part of the sink drain. Then, simply tighten it on with a slip nut.
  5. Install the P-Trap: Fit the nuts and washer onto the trap arm and drain pipe with the washer points facing the open end. If not, you risk water backing into your cabinets. Place the P-trap over each pipe’s ends and tighten the nuts with a screwdriver.
  6. Test the Pipe for Leaks: Once you’ve secured everything, turn on the water to test for additional leaks. If everything is tightly secured, you should not have any more drain pipes leaking.

If you’re dealing with minor leaks, use epoxy putty/plumber’s putty, pipe clamps, or plumber’s/self-securing silicon tape to secure the water supply and fix the leaky sink.
